What is an
online poker satellite ?.
Online poker Satellites, are a form of online poker
tournament BUT they are used as means to get to another,
bigger and normally landbased poker tournament at a fraction
of the full buy in price that is required to enter. .
For example :
To buy an entry or seat in a major tournament like the EPT (
European Poker Tour ) can be expensive, which means that the
tournament will only be open for players who can afford the
'bankroll' to enter. What a satellite does is offer online
players a 'cheaper alternative' option of 'winning' a place
in a major tournament. Poker
Stars is an excellent site for satellites.
Satellite entry fees are a lot lower than the full buy
in fee normally required to enter a major landbased
tournament so when a player enters a satellite, he or she is
effectively entering an online tournament to try and win a
place in a landbased tournament.
How it's possible.
With so many players entering online satellites and only a
limited few being able to qualify, the buy in from the
players who don't qualify, added up will make the buy in
cost and enable some lucky players the chance to go further
in the game.
The main difference between buying a place and going
the Satellite route, is that the satellite entrants have to
'work' their way to a landbased tournament and so a seat is
not guaranteed unless the player performs on the day of the
satellite 'qualifier'..
There are many combinations of satellite games but if
you just remember that the satellite is a way of getting to
the stars, then that would be a good way of seeing that you
can go a lot further in poker via a satellite than you can
in a regular poker tournament which is played for instant
cash rewards rather than poker progression.
A satellite success story.
One example of an online satellite success story, is
that of a guy called Chris Moneymaker.
He paid $40 for entry into a satellite that offered winners
a $10,000 direct entry to the WSOP ( World Series of Poker
and the biggest landbased tournament).
Needless to say he got his place at the WSOP, then went on
to win the main event and took home a cool $2.5 million
dollars. !!
Not all poker sites online offer satellites and the
sites that do offer satellites, will vary in what
tournaments are available to qualify for, so if this is
something that interests you , check with the poker site
before you sign up.
The menu on the right of this page shows you some of the
best sites to visit for online satellite qualifiers.
